(Basic course)

WHO

This is a five day’s basic course designed for professionals such as counsellors, health care providers, councillors, social workers, teachers, parents and all those who find themselves working with children in a counselling or support context. The course is a basic introduction to working effectively and theoretically with children (two and a half to twelve and a half years of age). The course is facilitated by professionally qualified trainers.

CONTENT & METHODOLOGY

The course is based on practical experience and theoretical foundations. The practical aspect focuses on self exploration and self awareness. Participants reflect upon their childhood experiences in order to gain a better understanding of what it means to be a child. This is an exciting part of the course where participants support each other to deal with their unresolved childhood experiences, relating it to the current child’s experience, at the same time making a contribution to the groups learning.

The topics covered will include child/counsellor relationship, theoretical and practical foundations, child counselling skills and approaches, play therapy, self esteem, social skills, and developing protective behaviour. Course outline will include counselling children, child development, theoretical perspective, developing self awareness, child and families focusing at the complexity and dilemmas, understanding children’s problems, importance of play, counselling through play therapy, useful approaches and techniques, legal issues involved in working with children, dealing with children in loss and bereavement and ethical considerations.

Participants who successfully satisfy the course objectives are awarded the Associations Certificate of attendance.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum KCSE C-
  • Interest to learn and understand oneself in relation to work with children
  • Work experience related to children is an added advantage
  • Counselling work experience an added advantage
